Merzouga, a small village located 20 km from the Algerian border, is famous for the highest sand dunes in Morocco, from whose peaks you can admire incredibly beautiful sunrises and sunsets. It's no wonder, then, that this place has served as a location for several films, including "Lawrence of Arabia," "The Mummy," "Legionnaire," and "Spectre." According to legend, this area was once a jungle, but when the locals, overflowing with wealth, refused to feed a poor woman, God became angry and transformed the jungle into a dry, inhospitable, and barren desert. As with every legend, this one may have a grain of truth – thousands of years old cave paintings discovered in the area depict animals living in this green environment.

However, the magnificent views of the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi are not the only attractions that await you in the desert. Camel riding, sandboarding, i.e. sliding down a steep dune on a board, overnight stay in a tent, wonderful, aromatic tagine served for dinner, Berber music and a breathtaking view of the star-studded sky - doesn't that sound exciting?
