“Play it again, Sam…” Everyone probably recognizes this famous phrase, and for most people the city is associated only with the famous film, in which Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart created immortal characters. But Casablanca is much more: it is the cosmopolitan, industrial and economic heart of Morocco and its largest city, and the colonial architecture and nightlife make it worth a stop for at least a day.
The city was founded under the name Anfa in the 6th century BC by the Phoenicians, and in the 15th century, its port became a haven for pirates, who became such a threat that the Portuguese, considering their interests in the area were seriously threatened, decided to demolish the city. It was rebuilt the following century, turning it into a fortress. Subsequently destroyed by an earthquake, it did not regain its former importance until the 20th century. Today, immense poverty collides with equally immense wealth, causing considerable social tension. When visiting Casablanca, it's worth seeing the King Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest in the world and the largest in Morocco; the Corniche, full of cafes and nightclubs; and both the modern office district and its polar opposite, the old medina – a traditional, walled town where you can get a taste of true Morocco.
