General Information

Situated at the confluence of the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert, Ouarzazate has served as a key trading and strategic point for centuries. Today, it is known primarily as the "Gateway to the Sahara" and the center of Moroccan cinema. One of the region's greatest treasures is the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, an impressive fortified settlement listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, whose earthen walls and kasbah towers have served as the backdrop for numerous film productions, including "Gladiator" and "Game of Thrones." The city is also home to Atlas Studios, one of the largest film studios in the world, where scenes for Hollywood blockbusters have been filmed. The settlement was likely founded around the 16th century, and the site was one of many important points on the trade route connecting ancient Sudan with Marrakesh. In addition to its well-preserved houses, you'll also find a mosque, fortifications, a caravanserai, and two cemeteries (one Muslim and one Jewish).
