General Information

This sandstone plateau is a hauntingly dramatic place, a true miracle of evolution, with unearthly, sometimes eerie landscapes. Sheared hilltops and terracotta-colored pillars carved by an inhuman hand, reaching to the horizon, intersected by meandering streams and creeks; oasis-like, forested canyons; several cool, crystal-clear, natural pools – all this makes Isalo one of the most popular parks in Madagascar. Add to this an extensive list of endemic plants, 14 species of lemurs and 77 species of birds, although it is not the living nature that draws the crowds to Isalo. It is also the homeland of the Bara people and a place where many hidden graves are located. Local tradition says that placing a pebble on such a tombstone guarantees fulfillment of wishes and safety!
