General Information

This unique national park on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica was established in 1970 to protect sea turtles, which lay their young here from July to October. The park is covered by a vast flood plain formed by the connection of river deltas with their meandering channels. The swampy jungle, intersected by ribbons of channels, is home to 300 species of exotic birds, monkey families, caimans, crocodiles, wild cats and astonishingly beautiful species of frogs. Tortuguero is one of the most diverse regions of Costa Rica, the Caribbean influence is particularly visible in the local cuisine, which is based largely on seafood and tropical fruits.

You can only get here by boat, the transfer to the lodges located right next to the main river channel takes about 45 minutes and is a great opportunity for your first contact with Tortuguero's nature. Monkeys sneak between the wooden huts hidden in the tropical forest, iguanas walk, and rainbow toucans rest in the treetops. In the morning, howler monkeys and an orchestra of exotic birds wake you up. A cruise along the river channels provides another opportunity to get to know the extraordinary world of animals and plants, and trekking through the jungle with a naturalist will provide unforgettable emotions.
