General Information
Monteverde is a region in the north-central part of Costa Rica that is a nature reserve due to the cloud forests that grow on its hills. Their name comes from the phenomenon of water vapor condensation, which is why they are constantly shrouded in fog. Only a small part of the reserve, about 3% of its area, is open to tourists. Hiking along the marked trails amidst the constant chirping of birds and the omnipresent greenery is a breathtaking experience. The forests can also be admired from above, thanks to the network of sky walks, i.e. bridges and suspended boardwalks. From this perspective, you can get a better look at the treetops and their residents, while not disturbing their natural activities.
The reserve is home to almost 500 species of birds and just as many species of colorful butterflies. You can also see 100 different mammals and over 2500 types of plants. The most famous inhabitants of Monteverde include the quetzal, called the treasure of Costa Rica and the most beautiful bird in the world. During the hike, you can also spot tarantulas, capuchins, coatis, and various snakes and birds not found anywhere else hiding in the cloud forest.
