General Information
The largest – and only – city in the valley is a fascinating cultural mix. It is home to representatives of all the Papuan tribes, Indonesian peoples and various other nations. Their traditions clash with each other, creating an effect that is impossible to see anywhere else. So, although Wamena does not boast any interesting tourist attractions, it is a great place for people-watching – the intermingling of cultures, exotic costumes and customs, and especially for experiencing the full diversity of Indonesian cuisine.
A particularly interesting place is the local markets, full of colours and smells, where Dani and Yali, coming to the city from distant villages, sell their products and stock up on necessary items. Not far from the main market, a bridge is thrown over the fast-flowing Baliem River – just sit on its edge and soak up the atmosphere of a small town.
