Ilulissat

The city lies on the west coast of Greenland, right at the mouth of one of the most active glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere, and has long been a key reference point for understanding Arctic nature. From here, you can admire the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO-listed ice fjord where massive chunks of ice break off from the glacier and slowly drift toward the open sea. They change with the time of day and the light—from milky white to deep shades of blue—and their presence gives the city a rhythm and scale unlike any other.

Despite its small size, Ilulissat remains a vibrant community. Colorful houses stand on the edge of ice, rock, and water, and daily life unfolds in the shadow of one of the world's most dynamic natural phenomena. Tradition and modernity collide in local museums, including the home of Knud Rasmussen, a polar explorer and Arctic explorer who set off on his expeditions from here. The town is also a natural starting point for outdoor exploration. Hiking trails lead along the fjord, cruises allow for close-up observation of icebergs, and in winter, the area is illuminated by the Northern Lights, appearing over the icy landscape in the silence of the Arctic night. In summer, the sun barely sets, lengthening the days and allowing for a completely different rhythm of exploration.
