Mauritius - climate

Mauritius is an island located in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons are the opposite of those in Europe. When it is winter here, it is summer in Mauritius. While we are enjoying summer, it is winter on the island. However, the definition of winter in this region differs from the one we know from our reality. Mauritius has a subtropical climate. Depending on the season, temperatures range from about 22 to 35°C in summer and from 18 to 26°C in winter. Due to its geographical location, the weather in Mauritius can be difficult to predict. Temperatures in individual parts of the island may vary, but these differences are not significant - when the temperature in Grand Baie or Port Louis is 29°C (i.e. from December to March), it will be about two degrees cooler in the Chamarel mountains.

The island's relatively close proximity to the equator means that Mauritius' day length is around 12 hours almost all year round. The difference between the longest and shortest day is only 2 hours 26 minutes.

Rainfall on the island can be expected all year round, but the summer season, which is definitely warmer, is also more abundant in rain - the most rainfall falls in the period from January to March. Winter in Mauritius is the dry season, which is why rainfall is much less from May to November. Less rainfall is recorded on the west coast than on the east. The wettest and coldest area in Mauritius is the central part of the island and the Chamarel Mountains located in the south, which owe their increased humidity to lush green vegetation when cyclones come from the Indian Ocean.

Hurricanes and cyclones are possible in Mauritius. The windiest season lasts from December to March. This is also when there is the greatest probability of strong and violent air vortices, or cyclones, often combined with long-lasting rainfall. Due to the varied terrain, stronger gusts of wind in the east of the island can occur from June to August. The southern coast of the island is most exposed to winds.

When choosing a time to travel, you should pay attention to which coast you plan to spend your vacation on. The eastern coast, which is windier, will be the ideal destination from November to April, while the western and northern coasts, where conditions are milder and temperatures are higher, host tourists all year round.

Weather and temperatures in Mauritius throughout the year

Mauritius – weather in January

Early January is a time when there are still many tourists in Mauritius who spent Christmas here. Although the temperature in January in Mauritius is high (up to 30°C) and it is summer, it is not the best month to travel. This is the rainy season - high humidity, heavy downpours and the possibility of a cyclone do not encourage trips in this direction.

Mauritius – weather in February

Like January, February is also not a good time to go to Mauritius. It is an exceptionally hot period, which, in addition to high air and water temperatures, is also characterized by high humidity. This is a time when cyclones can occur on the island, so we advise against traveling at this time.

Mauritius – weather in March

March is still the rainy season in Mauritius. This month is very hot, so it will be a good time for people who want high temperatures. However, there is a possibility of cyclones. In March, Mauritius does not have many tourists, so it is possible to take advantage of many attractions without crowds and queues. Prices for trips at this time can also be much lower than during the tourist season. At the turn of March and February, Mauritius celebrates the Hindu festival of Holi, a festival of colours organised to mark the beginning of spring.

Mauritius – weather in April

This month is slightly cooler than the previous ones, but still very warm. Temperatures oscillate around 29-30°C. April is also characterized by high water temperatures, around 27°C. During this period, the number of tourists in Mauritius increases.

This is one of the best months to go holidays in Mauritius! In May, temperatures in Mauritius are very pleasant (around 25°C), while humidity is much lower. The risk of precipitation is also lower than in previous months. May is a good time not only for sunbathing, but also for active sightseeing on the island.

Mauritius – weather in June

June in Mauritius is similar to May, but it is a bit cooler. At this time, there are excellent conditions for exploring the island. The average temperature is 24°C. In June in Mauritius, we can count on many pleasant, warm and sunny days. However, it is worth remembering to wrap up warmly when spending evenings outdoors.

Mauritius – weather in July and August

July and August are winter months in Mauritius, but this does not mean that the weather forecast will change dramatically. The temperature drops slightly, remaining around 23°C. The island is in the dry season at this time, so the probability of precipitation is low, but the trade winds can become stronger. The water temperature is similar to the air temperature at this time. These months are a good choice for people who do not tolerate heat well but would like to visit Mauritius.

Mauritius – weather in September

The weather in September in Mauritius is good for tourists. The temperature rises and is a few degrees higher than in July and August. This is also a good time considering the rainfall, which is the lowest during this time of the year. In September, the trade winds begin to weaken, which makes it a fantastic time not only for sunbathing, but also for traveling around the island. During their stay in Mauritius at the turn of August and September, tourists have the opportunity to celebrate the national holiday of Ganesh Chaturthi, a Hindu festival in honor of the god Ganesha, with the locals.

Mauritius – weather in October

October in Mauritius is a guarantee of high temperatures and beautiful weather. This is the period when the heat waves that will settle on the island for good in the next few months are already felt. Tourists are very eager to visit Mauritius in October. Not only the weather is encouraging, but also the Hindu festival of light Diwali, celebrated at this time, during which candles and lanterns are lit all over the island.

Mauritius – weather in November

November is considered to be the perfect time to trip to Mauritius. While Europe is experiencing a rainy and gloomy autumn, Mauritius offers a truly tropical holiday. Daytime temperatures remain around 30°C. In November, in addition to the temperature, humidity also begins to rise.

Mauritius – weather in December

December in Mauritius means summer in full swing. High temperatures and a tropical climate attract many tourists at this time. December is also likely to bring more rainfall than in previous months. However, this is not a problem, as it purifies the air and provides refreshment. December is a special month due to Christmas and New Year. In Mauritius, you can celebrate this time in a special way, for example by sunbathing on one of the beautiful sandy beaches.

Water temperature in Mauritius

The seasons won't matter much if you want to swim in the ocean, because even in the winter months the water temperature doesn't drop below 22°C, while in the summer (from January to March) it reaches up to 27°C. However, the high water temperature in Mauritius is not the only reason why it is worth choosing this destination for your holiday - the coral reef surrounding almost the entire island makes the ocean calm here, devoid of waves... and sharks. You should also remember about the quite strong tides, which have their advantages and disadvantages. The good thing is that during low tide you can see the reef without having to dive - and even go from one islet to another (from Ile aux Cerfs to Ile de l'Est), the bad thing is that swimming at this time may be difficult.
