CAPE TOWN WEATHER
DECEMBER - MARCH IS THE BEST TIME FOR THE BEACH!
If you’re planning on hitting the beach, the best time to visit Cape Town is during the summer (December to March). This is when you can expect warm weather, clear skies and long days – perfect for sun worshippers. Temperatures in Cape Town can be high during these months, especially in January and February, when the average is around 30°C. To cool off, dip your toes in the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, such as at Camps Bay or one of the four Clifton beaches. If you prefer a swim in warmer waters, head to False Bay, which is half an hour’s drive south of the city centre (although the beach can get crowded here).
During the peak season, Cape Town comes alive with a variety of musical, artistic and cultural events. The city also hosts festive celebrations, with street decorations and bustling Christmas markets selling crafts, gifts and food. The Christmas lights are switched on during the Festival of Lights on the first Sunday in December. On the same day, the Kirstenbosch Gardens also host a Carols by Candlelight concert, which is worth booking in advance. If you’re travelling with children, be sure to visit the V&A Waterfront, where you can meet Santa Claus.
To experience Cape Town’s unique atmosphere, attend the Tweede Nuwe Jaar Parade (Minstrels’ Carnival) on January 2nd in the city’s main square, the Grand Parade. Minstrels in colourful costumes dance, sing and play traditional ghoema drums. Alternatively, visit in March for the Cape Town Carnival, where you’ll see impressive floats, lavish costumes and dancing.
It is worth remembering, however, that this is also a time when tourist numbers increase and accommodation prices can be higher – sometimes by as much as 80% compared to the low season, especially during the local school holidays, which usually fall between mid-December and mid-January. If you are planning to travel to South Africa during the Christmas and New Year period, you should start booking your accommodation several months in advance.
MARCH - MAY AND SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER ARE THE BEST MONTHS FOR CLIMBING
If your heart is racing at the thought of climbing, Cape Town is a great choice for travel between March and May and September and November. During these months weather in cape town offers ideal conditions for lovers of mountain adventures and outdoor activities.
Spring (March - May) in Cape Town is a time when temperatures hover around a pleasant 20-25°C, making climbing and trekking comfortable. During this time, mountains and trails such as Table Mountain, Signal Hill and Lion's Head are particularly attractive, as the sun is not as intense as in summer and the days are full of natural light. In addition, spring rains make the vegetation lush and the landscapes full of fresh colours, making every trek an unforgettable experience.
Autumn in Cape Town (September – November) is also a great time for climbing and trekking enthusiasts. The temperature during this period ranges between 15 and 25°C, which is ideal for outdoor activities. During this time, you can admire the changing colours of the landscape and avoid the biggest tourist crowds that appear in summer. This is also a great time to climb Table Mountain, the symbol of Cape Town, and other surrounding mountains, as the weather is stable and the views are crystal clear.
During these months, Cape Town is bustling with life, but in a more moderate way. Take the time to explore local attractions, such as wine tours, exploring the colourful Bo-Kaap district or strolling through the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, which offer extraordinary visual experiences in spring and autumn.
CAPE TOWN LOW SEASON – JUNE – NOVEMBER
If you’re looking for a more affordable and less crowded time to visit Cape Town, June to November is a good choice. This is the so-called low season in the region, which falls during the winter in the southern hemisphere. This means cooler days with temperatures ranging from 10 to 18°C and more rainfall, especially in June and July. While the weather can be less stable, the city offers many attractions that are available year-round, and with fewer crowds, you can experience them in a more intimate setting.
One of the biggest advantages of visiting South Africa during this time is the lower prices for accommodation and tourist services. Many luxury hotels, guesthouses and restaurants offer significant discounts, making it an ideal time to travel for those looking for more value for their money. The low season is also a time when you can enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere – popular destinations like Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront are less crowded, allowing for a more relaxing visit. Winter in Cape Town, while cooler, opens up many possibilities for travellers, especially when it comes to indoor activities. Although it may be raining outside, it is an ideal time to visit the many museums, art galleries and cultural attractions that can be crowded during the peak season. Cape Town offers unique places such as the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), the largest museum of contemporary art in Africa. This place is not only fascinating for its rich collection of African art, but also for its impressive architecture. Also worth a visit are the District Six Museum, which tells the story of the difficult era of apartheid, and the Robben Museum, an important testament to the fight for freedom. In Cape Town during the winter, you can also immerse yourself in local culture by visiting art galleries such as the Goodman Gallery and Everard Read, which showcase works by local artists, often exploring themes related to African identity and history.
Winter in Cape Town is also a great time to observe wildlife. Especially from August to October, the Hermanus area, just a few hours from Cape Town, is a great place to watch the whale migrations that pass along the coast. It is one of the best places in the world to observe these majestic animals from land. Wineries around Cape Town, such as Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, are less crowded during this time, giving you more freedom to taste wines and explore the scenic landscapes. What’s more, the cooler days are the perfect time to go hiking in Table Mountain and the surrounding trails, which can be too hot in summer.
