How to prepare for a holiday in Thailand?
Tajlandia is an undisputed tourist paradise and one of the most popular destinations for exotic holidays. In this extraordinary country, you can relax on heavenly beaches, get to know oriental culture and experience eastern spirituality. However, before you decide to go to this exotic place, find out how to prepare for the trip. Thanks to this, your holidays in Thailand will be safe and carefree.
Although tourists from all over the world spend their holidays in this eastern paradise, remember that it is an Asian country and many things can surprise you there. Therefore, before you go there on vacation, check what to expect, what is worth seeing and how to plan your trip so that everything runs smoothly and without any problems.
Weather in Thailand. When to go on vacation to Bangkok?
Tajlandia is famous for its high temperatures all year round – Bangkok is called the hottest capital in the world for a reason. It has a tropical monsoon climate. The answer to the question: "When to go on vacation to Thailand?" depends on what places you plan to visit.
The best time to visit the northern and central parts of the country is the cool season, which occurs from November to February. The temperature is around 30ºC, although at night in the north it can drop below 15ºC. After that comes the hot season. The country is muggy and humid then, with temperatures reaching up to 40ºC. During the rainy season, heavy rainfall can make sightseeing much more difficult. The eastern coast (the islands in the Gulf of Thailand) is best visited from November to the end of April, the southwestern coast (the Andaman Sea) from January to April. As for the southwestern coast, the dry season lasts from January to April, and the rainy season from May to December. However, rainfall during the rainy season, excluding November, is relatively insignificant and you can travel to these areas at this time as well - off-season you can expect lower prices and a lack of crowds.
It is impossible not to love Thailand. For most, it is the epitome of exoticism: tropical beauty, blue water, white sand, green coconut palms leaning over the crystal clear sea. Ahead of you is a journey - Bangkok and two paradise islands.
Vaccinations before traveling to Thailand
Planning a vacation to Thailand? Think about vaccinations in advance. Just because you don't have to get vaccinated doesn't mean it's not worth it. It all depends on the type of trip you decide to take.
The hepatitis A vaccine protects against the so-called foodborne jaundice. Typhoid fever is also transmitted by eating contaminated food. It is therefore worth protecting yourself against these diseases if you intend to try street food and eat in cheap eateries, which are mainly used by Thais. However, if you plan to eat and sleep exclusively in high-end hotels and restaurants, these vaccinations are not necessary.
If you're traveling in rural areas and areas that aren't heavily populated by tourists, you can also get vaccinated against rabies. Remember, though, that even with this vaccine, you'll still need to get another shot after the bite. An earlier dose only extends the time you have to get vaccinated again.
When travelling to Thailand, it is also worth protecting yourself against tetanus, diphtheria and polio. These vaccinations are mandatory in Poland, but to be fully effective, they must be repeated every few years. Many people forget about this, and these diseases can be caught even in our country. So check if you do not need to repeat them.
Among the vaccinations recommended before traveling to Thailand, those against cholera and Japanese encephalitis are often mentioned. These diseases are relatively rare there and the risk of catching them is small. However, if you are afraid of them, you can also get vaccinated against them.
Malaria in Thailand – is there anything to be afraid of?
Malaria is an extremely dangerous disease and there is no vaccine against it yet. It is no wonder that many people are afraid of it. Malaria in Thailand occurs mainly in the forests near the border with Cambodia. The chances of catching it in large cities and seaside resorts are very small, and can be reduced by taking appropriate preventive measures. This disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, so remember to use effective repellents. Those with a high (30-50%) DEET content work best. You can buy them both in Poland and locally. Also remember to cover your bed with a mosquito net and to wear long-sleeved and long-legged clothes after dark. You can also ask your doctor for a prescription for antimalarials, although they will be more useful in regions that are actually at risk of malaria.
A piece of land snatched from the sea, the safest country in the world and the largest seaport - Singapore. The Lion City has been held up for years as a model of an ideal state, where 70% of the territory is green areas, and urban developments arouse envy and admiration. A real mix of cultures, fantastic food and year-round weather. Welcome to the paradise of the urban jungle!
What currency should you take on holiday to Thailand?
Euro, dollars, or maybe a payment card? When going on vacation to Thailand, be sure to consider which option will be the most beneficial for you.
You can't pay by card everywhere in this Asian country - payment terminals are becoming increasingly popular, but don't count on finding them at the local market, street food stalls, small restaurants or small shops. That's why it's always better to have a supply of cash with you. ATMs in Thailand charge a flat fee of 200-220 baht, or about PLN 22, for each withdrawal from a foreign account. So if you decide to take a card with you, remember that withdrawing large amounts less often will be more beneficial than using an ATM frequently.
In Thai currency exchange offices, you can easily exchange dollars, euros or pounds. Which currency will be more advantageous depends on the current rates. Remember that you will get a better price by exchanging high-denomination banknotes.
When you go on holiday to Thailand, you can also buy baht at a Polish exchange office. However, you will have to order them in advance and this exchange will be less beneficial for you.
When traveling in Thailand, pay special attention to the banknotes. They have the king's image on them, and snatching, trampling or damaging them can be seen as an insult to the ruler. And that can get you into trouble, especially since Thais have great respect for the entire royal family. Currently, there are two types of banknotes in circulation - with the image of King Bhumibol, who died in 2016, and with the image of his son, King Vajiralongkorn.
Thailand visa
Polish citizens do not need a visa to stay in Thailand for less than 30 days. All you need to do at the border crossing or airport is show a ticket (e.g. a plane ticket) confirming that you will leave the country before the 30 days have elapsed, a passport valid for at least 6 months, and show that you have the funds for your stay (10 baht per person or 000 for a family). However, if you are planning a longer vacation in Thailand, you must apply for a visa at a Thai embassy, e.g. in Warsaw. You can get two types of visa: a single entry valid for 20 months (cost: PLN 000) and a multiple entry valid for 3 months (cost: PLN 120).
Citizens of Belarus must obtain a visa at the embassy. They can choose between two types: single or multiple entry. Citizens of Lithuania and Ukraine can obtain visas at the airport if their stay does not exceed 15 days. To do this, they need: a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival, a ticket confirming that they will leave the country before the 15 days have elapsed, and funds for the duration of their stay. If they intend to stay longer, they must apply for visas at the embassy.
Thailand with children. Is it safe to travel to Thailand?
Do you have small children and are wondering whether taking them on holiday to Thailand is a good idea? Definitely yes! Thais love children and always treat them with great warmth. In addition, many hotels offer services such as babysitting or play areas for the youngest, which will allow you to have some time for yourself. Of course, there are some inconveniences that cannot be avoided. A long, even 12-hour flight and a change in time will probably not be comfortable for your child. Before leaving, make sure that you have the appropriate vaccinations and provide your child with adequate sun protection. However, there is nothing to worry about, as best proven by... the author of this article. When I was 10, I spent almost two months in Thailand, after which I returned safe, sound and eager for more adventures and travels.

10 Dishes You Must Try on Your Thailand Vacation (Beware of Spicy Food!)
The country is world-famous for its cuisine. When traveling to Thailand, it is best to eat where the Thais eat. Don't be afraid of street food either. However, remember that the concept of hotness in Thailand is different from that in Europe. So even if you like spicy food, don't ask the chef to add extra spice to your order on your first day.
- pad Thai – fried noodles are one of the most iconic dishes of Thailand. They are served in various ways: with various vegetables, meat, egg, tofu, cashew nuts or sprouts. It depends largely on the inventiveness of the cook;
- Laab moo – a salad of strongly seasoned pork in an aromatic sauce, most often served with rice;
- Curry – Thai curry with coconut milk, with a creamy consistency and aromatic smell, comes in several varieties and colors. The most spicy is green curry. You can usually also choose whether it will contain chicken, beef, pork, fish or seafood;
- Kung Che Nam Pla – raw shrimp marinated in fish sauce;
- Satay – chicken skewers served with peanut sauce;
- Pancakes – freshly fried pancakes on the street are the perfect sweet snack for both small and big travelers. They usually have a sliced banana inside and are covered in coconut milk, but you can also find versions with other fruits, jams and chocolate;
- Tom kha kai – coconut soup with chicken;
- Tom Yam King – spicy, sour and extremely aromatic Thai national soup with shrimp;
- Phad Phak Ruam Meet – fried vegetables in oyster sauce;
- Mango sticky rice – a simple dessert made of sticky rice, ripe mango and coconut milk.
Durian – a fruit only for the brave! During your vacation in Thailand, you will see a ban on bringing it into many hotels, restaurants, and shops. Durian has a very intense smell, or rather stench, reminiscent of that of rotten cheese or meat. Its taste, however, is very popular. You can try durian raw or in the form of paste, or even ice cream.
Where to buy a SIM card?
If you want to use the internet in Thailand, the cheapest option is to use Wi-Fi, which is provided for free in most hotels, bars and restaurants. However, to stay in touch with the world and not overpay for roaming, you can buy a SIM card from a local operator. The first opportunity will present itself at the airport. There you will find prepaid cards tailored to the needs of tourists coming to Thailand for a holiday for a week or two. If your trip is going to be longer, head to the 7eleven store. You will find a wider selection of packages there. Once you have decided on a specific card, the salesperson will help you register it - all you have to do is show them your passport.
Tuk Tuks in Bangkok
Virtually zero crumple zone, no seat belts, colorful decorations and a driver madly overtaking larger cars – this is the tuk tuk, the undisputed symbol of South Asia. These vehicles resembling covered three-wheeled motorcycles are particularly popular in Bangkok. A ride in a tuk tuk is a must on your trip to Thailand. These vehicles do not have any taxi meters, so before you go for a ride, agree on a price with the driver. Remember to haggle and do not agree to pay in advance! Also, do not let yourself be talked into lowering the price in exchange for a "short stop". The driver will then take you to his friends' shop, where you will be presented with their goods. If you are not assertive, you may end up with unwanted textiles, jewelry or handicrafts, and you will waste a lot of time. Also, when getting in a tuk tuk, make sure you have enough change. The driver may not be able to get change from a large denomination banknote.

Biggest attractions of Thailand
When planning a holiday in Thailand you must visit:
- Bangkok, the “City of Angels” and capital of Thailand is a place you can’t miss when traveling in this country. Bustling streets filled with freshly prepared food stalls and food stalls, floating markets and opulent Buddhist temples. You absolutely must visit The Grand Palace and to the temples: Wat Pho, to see the huge Reclining Buddha, and Wat Traimit, where there is supposedly the largest statue made entirely of gold. Also take a boat trip along the canals and visit the famous floating market.
When in Bangkok, it is worth going to Ayuthaya, located just 60 km from the city. This is the former capital of Thailand, founded in the XNUMXth century. In the XNUMXth century, it was destroyed by the Burmese and abandoned. There you can see beautiful stone sculptures of Buddha and ruins of palaces, monasteries and temple complexes.
- Sukothai is the capital of the kingdom of the same name, which was conquered by Ayuthaya in the 20th century. The former city is home to the Sukothai Historical Park, which houses over XNUMX picturesquely situated temples. Walking among the stone statues and ornately carved buildings, you will almost be transported back in time to the golden age of Siam.
- It's hard to call it an attraction, but when traveling in Thailand it's worth going to Kanchanaburi and seeing the famous Bridge over the River Kwai. It is part of the Thai-Burma railway, known as the “Death Railway” because prisoners of war from the United States and Western Europe captured by the Japanese during World War II were employed to build it. Many of them died due to exhausting work and difficult conditions. Their fates are presented in an interactive museum located in Kanchanaburi.
- A holiday in Thailand is best finished with a rest on one of the paradise beaches on the islands off its coast. The most popular and most crowded are Krabi and Phuket. However, many of them still retain their idyllic atmosphere. In addition to the aforementioned Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yoa Noi, these include Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lipe, Koh Samui and Koh Lanta. In addition to blissful relaxation, they offer diving and snorkeling. This is a great opportunity to get to know the extraordinary and colorful underwater world up close! When relaxing on the beach on Koh Lanta, be sure to see the Emerald Cave. It is located on the western shore of Koh Muk. The name of this 80-meter-long cave comes from the fact that the light reflecting off the water surface falls on the walls, giving them a characteristic color. You can enter it by swimming or kayaking only at low tide. At its end is a small, hidden beach surrounded on all sides by rocks.
The tour begins in the incredible city of Bangkok, with a later exploration of the mystical temples of Angkor in Cambodia. As the cherry on the cake, the paradise island of Koh Yao Yai on the Andaman coast of Thailand.

Holidays in Thailand – watch out for this!
One of the most popular attractions in Thailand is elephant riding. However, many of the facilities offering this type of entertainment do not treat the animals properly. The elephants are subjected to cruel training almost from birth. This process is called phajaan, which means "breaking the spirit". The animals are then forced to work hard, often beyond their capabilities, and the benches with tourists cause degeneration of their spines. If you want to meet elephants in Thailand, choose a responsible facility, such as Elephant Nature Park. They keep animals taken from places where they were treated badly. You will have the opportunity to see them up close, help feed them and bathe them.
If you want to practice conscious tourism, consider visiting the villages of the Karen people. They are located in the north of the country, for example in the vicinity of Chiang Mai. The women of this tribe are often called "long necks", because they wear metal rings that lower their collarbones and deform their rib cages, making their necks seem unnaturally long. Today, the village is called a "human zoo" by many and resembles an open-air museum arranged for tourists.
When on holiday in Thailand, remember that according to the constitution of this country, not only is it forbidden to insult the king and royal family, but they are also immune from any form of criticism. Also, treat his images with respect. You can even face a prison sentence for insulting the ruler!
Thai law severely punishes all drug offences. Possession of illegal substances can result in high prison sentences, even life imprisonment or the death penalty. Also, do not leave your luggage unattended, as smugglers sometimes plant drugs on tourists and hope they will carry them through checkpoints.
Planning a trip to Thailand? Be sure to bring shirts that cover your shoulders and pants or skirts that go below your knees. Only in such attire can you enter Buddhist temples. Once you are inside, do not stretch your feet towards the Buddha statue when you sit down, because this is considered an insult.
